Under close supervision, to perform a variety of routine manual tasks in the preparation and serving of food in large quantities.

Please Note: Applicants who meet the employment standards will be invited to take an in-person examination tentatively scheduled for October 19, 2023. The exam date(s) may change based on the number of applicants.

Typical Tasks

  • Washes, peels, and slices vegetables;
  • Prepares and bags sandwiches;
  • Assists in the preparation of salads;
  • Assists in the preparation of meal items;
  • Serves food on a cafeteria or kitchen tray line;
  • Pours fruit juice and milk;
  • Loads and unloads food carts and delivers meals to clients;
  • Washes pots, pans, and dishes;
  • Cleans steam tables, food carts, and trays;
  • Cleans food and dishes from tables;
  • Washes and fills napkin and condiment containers;
  • Loads and transports food supplies and kitchen utensils;
  • May drive a truck in the delivery of food to outlying buildings;
  • May be assigned as a Disaster Service Worker, as required;
  • Performs related work as required.

Employment Standards
Sufficient training, education and experience that demonstrate the ability to perform the above typical tasks and the possession of the knowledge and abilities listed below.

Training and Experience Note: The required knowledge and abilities are attained through possession of a high school diploma or equivalent;

AND

Three (3) months of experience in a kitchen, which has included preparing food and cleaning kitchen equipment (personal food preparation and/or personal kitchen cleaning is not qualifying experience).

Possession of a California ServSafe Food Handler Certificate or completion of course work in hand washing, microbiology, food allergies, temperature control, or related areas may substitute for the three (3) months of experience.

Special Requirement:

  • Possession of a valid California driver's license prior to appointment and the ability to qualify for and maintain a County Driver's Authorization.

Knowledge of:

  • Basic kitchen cleaning and sanitation methods;
  • Operation and care of kitchen equipment;
  • Proper lifting techniques.

Ability to:

  • Read and write in English;
  • Understand and follow simple written and oral instructions;
  • Learn food preparation and serving practices;
  • Establish and maintain effective working relationships.

Physical Requirements

  • Manual dexterity;
  • Ability to lift up to 50 lbs.
